Hate That I Made You Love Me by Ariana Grande | English to Spanish Translation + Learn Spanish Through Pop Music

A New Series: Translating English Songs into Spanish

When I started this website, my goal was simple: improve my Spanish while finding like-minded language learners who wanted to learn through music, movies, books, and stories instead of endless grammar drills.

Over time, translating Spanish songs into English helped me understand vocabulary, expressions, and culture. But recently I’ve been trying something different: translating English songs into Spanish.

Why?

Because understanding a language is one thing. Thinking in that language is another.

Being able to take an idea that was originally written in English and naturally express it in Spanish is one of the biggest milestones in language learning. This series is my way of practicing exactly that.

And what better place to start than Ariana Grande’s newest release, a song full of layered metaphors, heartbreak, confidence, and poetic imagery?

About the Song

“Hate That I Made You Love Me” is one of Ariana Grande’s most emotionally complex songs.

On the surface, it sounds almost playful. But underneath the sharp lyrics is a story about projection, insecurity, self-worth, and the uncomfortable reality that sometimes people fall in love with an idealized version of someone rather than the real person.

The song combines vulnerability with confidence, making it a fascinating exercise in translation because many of its meanings are implied rather than directly stated.

Hate That I Made You Love Me – English to Spanish lyric translation

I can’t tell you why
No puedo decirte por qué

But something inside
Pero algo dentro de mí

Is dancing with fire
Está bailando con fuego

Eyes lit like the sky
Con los ojos iluminados como el cielo

Turned tears into diamonds
Convertí lágrimas en diamantes

Got good at goodbyes
Aprendí a despedirme muy bien

Just know that I will find my way from you
Solo sabe que encontraré mi camino lejos de ti

Like flowers from a tomb
Como flores que nacen de una tumba

While you decide who you are
Mientras decides quién eres

And I can see right through
Y puedo ver a través de ti

Like shadows on the moon
Como sombras sobre la luna

And it’s all bad news
Y todo son malas noticias

Yeah I, I, I
Sí, yo, yo, yo

Hate that I made you love me
Odio haberte hecho enamorarte de mí

Sorry if I made me your type
Perdón si terminé siendo tu tipo ideal

Yeah I, I hate that I made you love me
Sí, odio haberte hecho enamorarte de mí

Cause I barely tried
Porque apenas lo intenté

What’s happening now?
¿Qué está pasando ahora?

You studied my crown
Estudiaste mi corona

And borrowed my body
Y tomaste prestado mi cuerpo

Warm, kissed by the sun
Cálido, besado por el sol

Then cold like the wind
Y luego frío como el viento

A bee stuck in honey
Como una abeja atrapada en la miel

Know that I will find my way from you
Sabe que encontraré mi camino lejos de ti

I guess it’s kinda cute
Supongo que es algo tierno

How you like me where you are
Que te guste la idea de mí desde donde estás

But I can see right through
Pero puedo ver a través de ti

Just don’t eclipse the moon
Solo no eclipses la luna

Cause it’s all bad news
Porque todo son malas noticias

Yeah I, I, I
Sí, yo, yo, yo

Hate that I made you love me
Odio haberte hecho enamorarte de mí

Sorry if I made me your type
Perdón si terminé siendo tu tipo ideal

Yeah I, I hate that I made you love me
Sí, odio haberte hecho enamorarte de mí

Cause I barely tried
Porque apenas lo intenté

I’ve held your projections when you’ve felt so insecure
He cargado con tus proyecciones cuando te sentías tan inseguro

Tell me why is it this way
Dime por qué es así

Why you so hate to see women endure
¿Por qué te molesta tanto ver a las mujeres resistir?

Is it really my fault
¿De verdad es mi culpa?

You all gave me your hearts
Todos ustedes me entregaron sus corazones

Of your own accord?
Por voluntad propia

I don’t really think so
La verdad, no lo creo

I, I, I
Yo, yo, yo

Hate that I made you love me
Odio haberte hecho enamorarte de mí

Sorry if I made me your type
Perdón si terminé siendo tu tipo ideal

Yeah I, I hate that I made you love me
Sí, odio haberte hecho enamorarte de mí

Cause I barely tried
Porque apenas lo intenté

Translation Notes: Some Difficult Lines

A direct word-for-word translation doesn’t always capture the meaning.

“Sorry if I made me your type”

This is intentionally awkward in English.

A more natural Spanish version might be:

Perdón si terminé siendo exactamente tu tipo.

The lyric isn’t really about attraction. It’s about becoming someone’s idealized fantasy.

“I’ve held your projections”

In psychology, a projection is when someone places their own fears, insecurities, or expectations onto another person.

A natural Spanish rendering is:

He cargado con tus proyecciones.

This keeps both the psychological meaning and emotional weight.

“Like flowers from a tomb”

One of the song’s most beautiful images.

It suggests growth emerging from something that has already died.

Spanish captures this image quite naturally:

Como flores que nacen de una tumba.
